Five Key Costumes You Could Choose For a Disco Party

February 27th, 2010

The Disco era which is traditionally thought of as the 70’s really went through a few transitions. The late 60’s really brought us into the 70’s with the Go-Go girl and mod style appearance. The true era of disco only lasted a few years and it was a natural looking face with long straight hair and plenty of colorful clothing. The late 70’s started to create a punk look with dark make up, colored hair and a few fashion trends most of us would like to forget that took us well into the 80’s.

When attending a Disco party it is really quite acceptable to wear costumes that cover any of the spectrum of the 70’s and there is a lot of possibility. Below are five ideas for costumes for you to wear to a disco party.

1. Hippie Girl – Long very straight hair ironed out is priority. Loud awkward colors, not necessarily matching and in different pattern combinations. It does not necessarily matter what you wear here as long as it does not match and you don’t want to look like you’re trying to be sexy but you can make it a bit revealing! Natural make up is ideal here but feel free to wear false eyelashes.

2. Mod Girl – This will usually be a long sleeved very short one piece dress that flares in a retro pattern with a very bright color pallet. A headband that ties at the neck and hangs with a long ribbon is ideal and high boots are a must. Blue eyeshadow is also a good choice here.

3. Sexy Disco Dancer – This look is all about the matching top and either matching short skirt or pants. The midriff section should be bare. This outfit requires plenty of skin around the middle. The top will be very tight, long sleeved and tied up in the front. If a skirt is chosen it should be short and tight. If you choose pants then they must be hip-huggers, very tight and extremely flared out at the knee. Whichever bottom you choose to wear, finish the look off with a pair of platforms, the higher the better. Wild hair is perfect for this look as is a lot of glitter on your skin.

4. British Flag Dress- Every disco party always has at least one person that does the British flag “thing”. This is usually a sleeveless, short dress, that pretty much looks like you are wearing a flag and white high boots. A red hair band is a great accessory.

5. Neon Funk Costume – Representing the later part of the 70’s with the punk look, this is a costume where anything goes. Pink, purple or blue hair and plenty of dark makeup. Short skirts are perfect with layers of leg warmers and double or triple belts and bangle bracelets. A lot of bracelets! This was the look that transitioned us into rock glam of the 80’s so try to avoid any animal print as we were not quite there yet.

Disco parties are a lot of fun. The best part is seeing everyone’s costume because there are so many possibilities it is always interesting to see everyone interpretation of what the disco era meant to them. Have fun with this costume!
