The Competence in a Leader

March 11th, 2010

One of the attributes of a good leader is competence. A leadership system that is deficient in this aspect may not be result oriented. Competence is what makes a leader. Every society must therefore be more interested in this when considering somebody for a leadership status. A competent leader will realize that the energy he has at present is subject to depletion and he must make it a priority to guard that energy reserve jealously.

A competent leader understands the misery in prints. He knows that a reader today is a leader tomorrow and that the man who does not read good books has no edge over the man who cannot read them; he also know that reading is not an end in itself; it is only a means to an end. If you believe there is a seed of competence in you that needs to be developed and made mature, then one of the ways to make this come true is by cultivating the golden habit of reading! I call it reading without fainting. This is basically because reading breeds a complete man.

Competence is what prepares the mind of the leader to face the worst when it comes. Cowardice may not be attributed to a competent leader because he already knows that leadership is about being fit at all times for whatever comes into play. The competence in a leader as well makes him realize that we live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure; and that there is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we assay them with our eyes unfolded! When a leader is mindful of this, he becomes the hero of his followers just because they have learnt to trust his intentions at all times.

Leadership tenet should also be prioritized in politics in order to deliver the needed results. The bane of governance in most countries today is because we have sacrificed the dignity of quality leadership on the altar of selfishness and rapacity. Virtues do not make meaning to us any longer. Our leaders now showcase expertise in the art of telling lies. All these you will agree with me have infiltrated into the society with resultant negative effects on everyone. The moment competence is lost in a leader; he lost in the same vein, what it takes to lead effectively. The lead of an incompetent leader is like running on a treadmill, you expend so much energy without getting anywhere.
